diabetes-pregnant-womenWhen it comes to statistical data for any type of illnesses/disease it’s worth to say a couple of words about the difference between two terms: ‘prevalence’ and ‘incidence’. So, prevalence usually refers to the estimated population of people who have a certain disease at any given time. Incidence in its turn shows the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of a disease diagnosed each year.

Gestational diabetes is one of several diabetes types. It develops during pregnancy. So, it affects pregnant women only. Though, it affects not all pregnant women. Statistics says that about 4 percent of all pregnant women (or 135,000 cases) in the United States have this problem each year. It’s absolutely intolerable to say that “ONLY 4 percent”.

This rate is rather high. Moreover there is a danger that after a child birth this disease can develop into a stable form at once or within five to ten years. This depends on the individual peculiarities of the body, genetics, and some external factors. Approximately five to ten percent of women that had gestational diabetes also had diabetes following child birth.

Gestational diabetes is not a reason to refuse from getting pregnant. Of course it’s a danger, but its possibility is rather low.

Jaundice, also known as Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in newborns baby. Jaundice is characterized by yellow discoloration of the skin and the sclera or whites of the eyes. Actually jaundice is a symptom, not a disease and there are many reasons for it happening. This disease caused by the high level of chemical bilirubin in the blood. Depending on the level of the chemical, the yellow pigmentation of the skin and the sclera may vary. When it is too high, it could appear as brown and not yellow.

There are a few reason for newborn to have jaundice. One of it is prenatal infection of the mother such as rubella, syphilis, toxoplasmosis or cytomegalovirus . After birth, any bacterial or viral infection in the baby may cause jaundice.

The most popular one  is breast-milk jaundice that occurs in 1-2 percent of babies who are breastfed. This type of jaundice is related to an enzyme secreted in breast milk. This enzyme is responsible for increased absorption of bilirubin from the intestines. The breast-milk jaundice starts on at 4-7 days of life and may last for 3-10 weeks.

If your newborn is diagnosed with breast-milk jaundice, your health care provider may suggest more frequent feedings, or alternating breastfeeding and formula bottles. If the face and body are yellow, then the jaundice is quite high you must take your baby back to the hospital immediately. Don’t waste time going to an outside clinic. Your baby needs a blood test to determine the bilirubin level and immediate treatment if the level is high.

Just one important advice to you, if at any time you are not sure about your baby’s jaundice always check with the paediatrician.
