One of the main causes of Alzheimer’s disease maybe come from the virus that causes cold sores. From the research found that existing drugs could be used to treat the most common form of dementia.New evidence found by a Scientists at the University of Manchester that the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) might be in up to 60 per cent of Alzheimer’s cases.
This news is really exciting because the product to threat the HSV1 virus are already publish widely. All the drugs such like acyclovir and Zovirax have been on the market for many years, and are available over the counter.
The responsible person who lead the research, Professor Ruth Itzhaki said “One thing that is exciting about our research is that we already have drugs that have been used for a relatively long time against HSV1, which are cheap and well tolerated. If we are right, there is a good chance we could make progress quite quickly,”
What they will do after this is to test the theory in animal models, after which Itzhaki believes they could establish whether HSV1 is genuinely involved in Alzheimer’s within a year. At this moment the group is working hard to obtain funding for this upcoming stage of research.
According to them this HSV1 virus affects most adults, causing cold sores in 20-40 per cent of people. What they found do not indicate that many, or even most cold sore sufferers will get Alzheimer’s.
